Every figure is computed from that snapshot or from the index histories the capture job appends to; each module states its own date and how many items it looked at. History starts when its capture first ran and is never backfilled, so a young index shows a level rather than a trend — that is the honest state of it, not a bug. A 7-day or 30-day change appears only when an observation exists near the start of that window; a 24-hour change would need daily captures and is not shown.

Methodology

- Laspeyres price indices over fixed baskets:
index = Σ(p_now × q_base) / Σ(p_base × q_base) × 100. Skin baskets weight by 90-day trade volume at inception; the sticker basket by 7-day volume (the only sales window the sticker feed carries) with a $0.10 price floor; the case basket holds one of every priced case, so it tracks the cost of one of each. Baskets are chosen once and never re-pick themselves — a self-rebalancing basket drops the losers and quietly biases the index upward. “Since last capture” compares the two most recent observations; the 7-day and 30-day changes need an observation inside the first 40% of their window and are omitted otherwise. - Breadth
- Share of items up, down or within ±1%. By category it counts the baseline comparison (below); per basket it uses the per-item prices each index snapshot records, against the previous capture.
- Gainers and losers
- Current snapshot against the fixed baseline of 2 Mar 2026: only wears present in both, wears under $1 at baseline ignored, three comparable wears required, and the median per-wear change reported.
- Cross-market spread
(highest − lowest) ÷ lowestacross tracked marketplaces at the cheapest wear, Steam excluded because its price is gross of a fee the seller never receives. Ranked over skins priced $5 or more with three or more quotes; the median over that population is stated beside the largest.- Unusual volume
- 30-day sale count against the same count from a capture at least five days older, for skins priced $1 or more with 20+ prior sales. Hidden until such a capture exists.
- Index highs and lows
- Noted only once an index has eight or more observations and its latest value is the single highest or lowest in its history.
- Prices, volume and liquidity
- Prices are the cheapest listing across the marketplaces we track, the same figure used on every skin page. Volume is Steam Community Market sales in 30 days. Liquidity in the tables is the provider’s 0-100 score, surfaced as-is; item pages also show CSDB’s own documented score. Full definitions: methodology.
High liquidity means an item has historically been easier to trade near its quoted price. Nothing on this page predicts future prices.
Frequently asked questions
How is the CSDB Skin Index calculated?
It is a Laspeyres price index over a fixed basket chosen once at inception: index = Σ(current price × base quantity) / Σ(base price × base quantity) × 100, where base quantity is 90-day trade volume at inception. The basket never re-picks itself, because a self-rebalancing basket quietly survivor-biases the index upward. A basket item with no current price carries its last known price rather than dropping out, and every snapshot records how many were carried.
Why do some indices show no change?
Index history begins the day the capture first ran and cannot be backfilled — an index whose early values were reconstructed after the fact is not one you could cite. Segment indices were established recently, so they show a level rather than a trend until more weekly observations accumulate.
What does the liquidity number mean?
It is the liquidity score from our market data provider, on a 0-100 scale, reflecting how readily an item trades. We surface it rather than deriving our own, and we do not dress it up with decimal places it does not have.
Why are cheap skins excluded from "most traded"?
By volume alone the most-traded skins are almost entirely items worth a few cents. A table of $0.03 consumer-grade skins is technically correct and useless, so the tables apply a minimum price.
