How Much Space Does CS2 Take to Download and Install?
Valve's number, and why the folder on your drive won't match it
Valve lists 85 GB of available space for Counter-Strike 2 — the same figure on the Windows and Linux minimums, and the only storage number Valve publishes. That is free space you should have before installing, not a measurement of the finished folder. Plan for more than 85 GB, because shader caches, workshop subscriptions and demos all grow outside the base install.
There are two different questions hiding inside "how much space does CS2 take". One is what Valve tells you to have free, which is a fixed, published number. The other is what the game actually occupies on your drive right now, which is a moving target that nobody — including us — can quote honestly.

What Valve actually requires
The storage line on the Counter-Strike 2 store page is the same on both supported platforms:

Two things worth noticing. First, Valve publishes no recommended tier for CS2 at all — the minimum is the whole spec, which is why the 85 GB figure is the one everybody quotes. Why we don't quote a live install size
Every number you have seen for "CS2 folder size" was accurate for one machine on one day. The install changes constantly: Valve ships new maps, replaces assets, adds cases and sticker capsules, and periodically repacks things wholesale. A figure written six updates ago is fiction now.
On top of that, two identical CS2 installs on two PCs can differ, because the parts that grow with use rather than with updates are not the same on any two machines. So rather than give you a number that ages badly, here is how to read yours:
- In Steam, open Steam → Settings → Storage. It lists every library folder you have, with a per-game size breakdown and the free space on each drive.
- Or right-click Counter-Strike 2 in your library and choose Properties → Installed Files, which reports the size on disk for that install.
- If you want to look at the folder itself, the location is covered in where the CS2 exe lives — note that the install folder is still called Counter-Strike Global Offensive.
The parts that live outside the install folder
This is the real reason CS2 eats more of your drive than the game folder suggests. Three things grow independently of the install:
- Shader cache. Steam stores pre-cached and compiled shaders in
steamapps/shadercache/730, alongside the library rather than inside the game folder — and your GPU driver keeps its own cache elsewhere again. CS2 rebuilds shaders after game updates and driver changes, which is also why the first match after an update tends to hitch. Subscribed maps download into Steam's workshop tree, not the CS2 install, so they never appear in the game's reported size. None of these are optional extras for most players. They are what normal use produces, which is exactly why "the game is X GB" is the wrong mental model.
Headroom for downloads and updates
Steam writes downloaded data before it commits it into the game folder, so an update needs space for both the incoming data and the existing install at the same time. On a drive that is nearly full, this shows up as a download that stalls, fails, or loops — which people usually misdiagnose as a network problem.

Getting space back
In rough order of how much you are likely to recover for how little effort:
- Delete old demos. Usually the biggest single win on an account that has been played for a while, because demo files are large and nothing prunes them.
- Unsubscribe from workshop maps you don't use. Unsubscribing removes the download; you can always resubscribe later and it costs you nothing but the download time.
- Clear the download cache if updates have left staged data behind.
- Move the install rather than deleting it. Steam can relocate a game between library folders from Properties → Installed Files → Move install folder, so a second drive solves the problem without a reinstall.
What you should not do is start deleting files inside the game folder by hand. Steam will simply pull them back on the next integrity check, and a half-deleted install is a common cause of launch failures.
