Why Is CS2 Blurry? Every Cause and Fix

CS2 renders razor sharp when it is actually drawing your monitor's native pixels. When it looks soft, something between the renderer and the panel is throwing pixels away — an upscaler, a resolution mismatch, a smoothing filter, or your monitor itself. There are only about six suspects, so this guide runs them in order of likelihood. Fix one, check the game, move on.

1. FidelityFX Super Resolution (the usual culprit)

FSR renders CS2 at a fraction of your monitor resolution and upscales the result. Every quality step below "Disabled" is real resolution you are giving away — the softness is most obvious on distant player models and text, exactly the things you least want smeared.

  1. Open Settings → Video → Advanced Video.
  2. Set FidelityFX Super Resolution to Disabled (Highest Quality).

Settings resets after big patches, driver reinstalls, and borrowed configs are how this switches on without you noticing — if CS2 "suddenly" went blurry, start here. 2. Non-native resolution

Check Settings → Video → Resolution against what your panel actually is. A 1440p monitor fed 1080p has to stretch every frame, and the interpolation is soft. Two separate cases:

  • Accidental mismatch — you just want native back. Set it and done.
  • Deliberate stretched 4:3 — blur is not inevitable. Set GPU scaling with Full Screen mode in the NVIDIA Control Panel (Display → Adjust desktop size) or AMD equivalent, so the GPU does one clean stretch. Most pros play stretched without smear — their exact resolutions are here.

3. Motion blur

If the game is sharp standing still and smears the instant you flick, Settings → Video → Advanced Video → Motion Blur → Disabled. It is purely cinematic, costs clarity in every fight, and no competitive player runs it.

4. CMAA2 anti-aliasing

CS2 offers two anti-aliasing families. MSAA samples real geometry — sharp but expensive. CMAA2 is a post-process pass that blends neighbouring pixels — cheap but soft, and on some setups it reads as a fine full-screen blur.

In Advanced Video → Multisampling Anti-Aliasing Mode, prefer 4x MSAA (8x if you have headroom). Only drop to CMAA2 when you need the frames, and if you do, expect the slight softness — that is the trade.

5. Texture filtering and sharpening

Texture Filtering Mode → Anisotropic 8x (or 16x) keeps ground and wall textures crisp at grazing angles for a negligible FPS cost — Bilinear/Trilinear blur every surface you are not facing square-on. If the image still feels soft after everything above, driver-level sharpening (NVIDIA Control Panel → Image Sharpening, or AMD Radeon Sharpening at ~50-80%) adds bite back without the artefacts of rendering tricks.

6. It might be the monitor, not the game

  • Refresh rate: Windows sometimes runs a 144/240 Hz panel at 60 Hz after a cable or driver change. Check Windows Display Settings → Advanced, and match Settings → Video → Refresh Ratein game. Motion clarity at 60 Hz reads as "blur" even when every frame is sharp.
  • Windows scaling: keep it at 100% on the gaming display; scaling plus windowed modes is a classic soft-image combo.
  • Overdrive/response: aggressive overdrive settings cause ghosting that looks like motion blur. Test a middle setting.

Why does CS2 look blurry all of a sudden?
The usual culprit is FidelityFX Super Resolution getting enabled — by a settings reset, a new driver, or a config change. It renders the game below your monitor resolution and upscales, which reads as smearing. Set it to Disabled (Highest Quality) first.
Should FidelityFX Super Resolution be on or off in CS2?
Off (Disabled / Highest Quality) unless you desperately need frames. Every FSR quality step renders fewer real pixels, and at typical monitor sizes the softness is very noticeable in a game about spotting pixels on angles.
Does stretched 4:3 make CS2 blurry?

Why is CS2 blurry only when I move my mouse?
