Can You Gift Prime in CS2?
No — and the reason is baked into how Prime attaches to an account
No. Steam does not allow the Prime Status Upgrade to be bought as a gift — the store data for the package explicitly marks it as not giftable, while ordinary paid games are marked as giftable. Prime also cannot be removed from an account once applied. The working alternative is a Steam digital gift card: send the funds, let them buy Prime themselves.
This one comes up every December and every time a friend gets bored of the non-Prime queue. The answer has not changed, but the internet is full of storefronts happily selling "CS2 Prime Gift" keys, so it is worth being precise about what is and is not possible.
Prime Status is sold as a Steam package attached to Counter-Strike 2 — Valve's own description is that it "grants Prime Account Status in Counter-Strike 2." It is not an item, it is not in your inventory, and there is no tradable form of it.
The evidence, not the folklore
Steam stores a giftable flag on every purchasable package. For the Prime Status Upgrade that flag is set to false. For ordinary paid games — pick any of them — it is set to true. Same storefront, same API, opposite answer, which rules out "Steam just doesn't do gifts for that kind of product."
That is why the CS2 store page shows a bare Add to Cartbutton for Prime with no gift option next to it, and why the checkout never offers you the "this is a gift" step you get on any other purchase.
The second piece of evidence is Valve's official Steam Support FAQ for Prime Status. It answers two questions that settle the matter between them:
- How do I add Prime Status to my account? "Prime Status can be purchased in-game or through the Steam Store." Those are the only two routes Valve names — no gift, no code, no transfer.
- Can I remove Prime Status from my account? "No. Currently there is no way to remove Prime Status from your account."
A permanent, unremovable account flag is not something Valve is going to let you hand around. And because the store page also states that the product is not eligible for refund, buying it on the wrong account is a mistake you cannot walk back.
What to do instead
The goal is to get the money onto their account so the purchase happens under their Steam login. Two things work:
- Send a Steam digital gift card. Valve sells these directly from the Steam store, you pick an amount and a Steam friend as the recipient, and the balance lands in their wallet. They then buy Prime themselves — in-game or from the CS2 store page. This is the clean answer.
- Buy it while they are logged in. If you are in the same room, the least fiddly version is to just pay on their account. Slightly inelegant as a gift, but it puts Prime exactly where it needs to be.
Note that you cannot send Steam wallet funds from your own balance to another person — a gift card is a separate product you buy, not a transfer out of your wallet.
The traps
- "Prime Status Upgrade — Steam Gift" listings. Key resellers still list these because CS:GO-era Prime was a different product. What you are actually buying today is usually an account, not a gift. Read the listing to the end before you assume otherwise.
- Pre-made Prime accounts. Cheap, plentiful, and a bad idea. The seller keeps the original email and phone number, which means they keep the recovery path. Steam accounts are also not transferable under the Steam Subscriber Agreement, so Support will not help you when it goes wrong.
- "I'll add Prime to your account for you." Anyone offering this needs your login. There is no legitimate version of this service.
- Buying Prime on the wrong account. It is unremovable and unrefundable. Check which Steam account is logged in first — this is the single most common way people waste the money.
Is it worth buying for them at all?
Worth knowing what the recipient actually gets before you spend on it. Valve's FAQ is unusually direct here: without Prime you receive no XP and no Service Medal on any game mode on any server, no Competitive Skill Group or Counter-Strike Rating, and no weekly care packages. Premier additionally requires Prime and Profile Level 10.

One nuance if you were hoping to just play together instead: a Prime and a non-Prime player can matchmake together, but only from a pre-made lobby, and the whole lobby is then treated as non-Prime.
