How Many Rounds in CS2? MR12 Explained
First to 13, halftime at 12 — and how the shorter format changed the economy game
CS2 competitive matches are first to 13 round wins under the MR12 format — two halves of 12 rounds, a maximum of 24 regulation rounds, sides swapping at halftime. At 12–12, Competitive matchmaking ends in a draw; Premier and pro play go to overtime.
A CS2 competitive match is first to 13: two halves of a maximum 12 rounds each, with a side swap after round 12. Win 13 rounds and the match ends immediately — a 13-0 sweep is 13 rounds total, a full-distance regulation game is 24.
If you learned Counter-Strike before CS2, unlearn "first to 16" — the MR15 era ended when CS2 launched. The shorter format ripples into the economy, overtime rules, and how much a single pistol round matters, so it is worth understanding properly.
Round counts by mode
| Mode | Format | Match ends at |
|---|---|---|
| Competitive | MR12 — two 12-round halves | 13 wins (12–12 is a draw) |
| Premier | MR12 + overtime | 13 wins, or overtime at 12–12 |
| Wingman (2v2) | MR8 — two 8-round halves | 9 wins |
| Deathmatch | No rounds — 10-minute timer | Timer ends |
| Arms Race | No rounds — level through the gun ladder | First golden-knife kill |
| Casual | Shortened round format, no side-swap pressure | Score limit (shorter than Competitive) |
How overtime works
At 12–12, regular Competitive matchmaking simply records a draw. Premier — and organised play on the same rules — goes to overtime:
- Overtime is played in six-round sets (MR3 — three rounds per side).
- Both teams start each set on a fixed overtime money amount rather than carrying their economy in.
- Win four rounds in the set and the match is yours (16–14 or similar final).
- If the set ties 3–3, another six-round set begins — repeat until someone breaks it.
What MR12 did to the economy
Fewer rounds means fewer chances to recover, and that reshaped buying decisions:
- Pistol rounds are enormous. Each half's pistol round leads into rounds 2–3 where the winner usually converts a 3-0 start — under MR12 that is a quarter of the distance to match point.
- Force-buys come earlier. With only 12 rounds a half, saving two rounds in a row costs too much scoreboard ground — you will see far more desperation buys than the MR15 era taught.
- Losing streaks bite harder. The loss-bonus system has less time to refill a broken economy, which is why a 7-1 half so often becomes 13-5.
Round-by-round money maths — kill rewards, loss bonuses, and when a force-buy is justified — is what the economy guide and economy calculator are for.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How many rounds is a CS2 competitive match?
- Up to 24 regulation rounds under MR12 — two halves of 12, first team to 13 round wins takes the match. Teams swap sides at halftime after round 12.
- What does MR12 mean?
- "Max Rounds 12" — each team plays a maximum of 12 rounds per side. CS:GO used MR15 (first to 16); CS2 shortened the format when it launched, which is why old "first to 16" advice no longer applies.
- What happens at 12-12 in CS2?
- In regular Competitive matchmaking the game ends in a draw. Premier and organised play go to overtime: six-round sets (three per side) — win four rounds in a set to take the match, and if a set ties 3-3, another begins.
- How many rounds is Wingman?
- Wingman is first to 9 — two halves of 8 rounds (MR8), maximum 16 regulation rounds, on cut-down maps with two players per team.
- Why did Valve switch from MR15 to MR12?
- Shorter matches: regulation dropped from a possible 30 rounds to 24, cutting typical match time by roughly a quarter. It also made every round more valuable — losing streaks are harder to recover from with fewer rounds to do it in.
