What a deposit bonus is actually worth

A bonus is quoted as a headline percentage — “100% up to $500” — but that number is almost never what reaches your withdrawable balance. Three terms decide the real value, and all three sit in the fine print rather than on the banner.

Wagering requirement. The multiple of the bonus you must stake before any of it can be withdrawn. A $100 bonus at 30× means staking $3,000. Every one of those turns is subject to the house edge, so at a 3% edge you would expect to lose about $90 of the $3,000 wagered — which is most of the bonus, before you have withdrawn a penny of it. This is the single most important number on any offer and the one most often omitted from affiliate pages.

Maximum cashout. Many bonuses cap what you can withdraw from bonus winnings regardless of what you actually win, commonly at a small multiple of the bonus. A cap turns an unlikely large win — the only outcome that makes a wagering requirement survivable — into a capped one.

Game weighting. Not every game counts equally toward wagering. Low-edge games are usually weighted down or excluded, precisely because they would let you clear the requirement cheaply. Read which games count before choosing where to play the bonus.

Put together, this is why a bonus is a reason to deposit rather than an edge. It is marketing spend designed to increase how much you wager, and it succeeds at that far more reliably than it pays players.

Why a valid code sometimes doesn’t work

If a code is rejected it is usually one of these rather than a dead code — and the order below is roughly how often we see each cause.

• You already have an account. Referral codes are nearly always new-account only. This is the most common cause by a distance, and no support ticket will change it.
• You have already deposited. Most operators will not apply a code retroactively. Enter it before the first deposit, not after.
• Another code is already attached. Arriving via a different referral link can silently bind your account to it, and only one applies.
• There was never a field to type it into. Where an operator carries the referral in the link itself, arriving through the link is what attaches it — so there is nothing to enter and nothing to reject. Each brand page says which kind it is.
• Your country is excluded. Offers are frequently restricted by jurisdiction even where the site itself accepts you.
• The offer behind it changed. The code can still attach your account correctly while the bonus it used to unlock no longer exists.
