game_mode Command Help & Examples

Did you know there are 15 game modes available in CS:GO and CS2? From the classic Casual and Competitive to Wingman, Demolition, Deathmatch and War Games, you can access them all thanks to the game_mode command.

On this page, we will teach you what the game_mode command is and how you can use it to select any game mode of your choice. Especially useful if you have grown tired of the typical casual matches and you want to go where the grass is greener, we will show you how to accomplish it by using the game_mode command.

Furthermore, we will also bring you examples on how to access any of the 15 game modes when using the game_mode command via the console, so you can start using it as soon as possible and learn how to change gamemode in CSGO console.

What is the game_mode Command?

The game_mode command can only be used in conjunction with game_type, as it’s a rule set by its syntax. It’s the unique way by which you can access any of the 15 game modes available such as Competitive, Deathmatch, Demolition and Skirmish.

This command only accepts numeric arguments, and you can place them next to the command, for example “game_mode 0” and enter it directly via the console. However, it will only take effect by entering the “game_type” along with it. It’s essential to learn its syntax, so you can use it properly and without complications.

You can use this command by placing it before game_type or vice versa. For example, entering it like this: game_mode 0; game_type 0, or game_type 0; game_mode 0, will have the same effect, and it will set the game mode to Casual.

It’s critical to learn all the combinations for using this command properly, so you can launch your desired game mode easily. This is why we have built a table with all of them, so you can refer to it when you want to launch a specific game mode for playing CS:GO (CS2):

Game Mode game_mode game_type
Casual 0 0
Competitive 1 0
Wingman 2 0
Weapons Expert 3 0
Training Day 4 0
Arms Race 0 1
Demolition 1 1
Deathmatch 2 1
Training 0 2
Custom 0 3
Guardian 0 4
Co-op Strike 1 4
War Games 0 5
Danger Zone 0 6
Workshop 0 7

In the next sections, we will show you how to use the command in each one of these 15  combinations, so you can launch your preferred game mode instantly. Be it launching War Games, Demolition, Danger Zone, or resetting it back to Casual, we will guide you step by step.

Remember, you can only use this command when creating your own game, if you are the server host or if you have admin rights.

You can use this command directly via the command, without activating sv_cheats beforehand. The only requirement is using it along the game_type command, so you can launch it without problems.

Since it’s clear what this command is, how it works, what are its limitations and the game modes you can launch thanks to it, it’s time to see how you can use it via the command, so you can start implementing it right off the bat.

How to Use the game_mode Command

Now, let’s see how you can use the game_mode command to select any of the 15 available game modes on CS:GO and CS2:

  1. Press the key “~” to launch the console
  2. Type in the command game_mode #; game_type #
  3. Press enter
  4. The command will select your preferred game mode instantly

You need to replace “#” for each one of the corresponding values to select your preferred game mode. For example, if you want to select the Deathmatch game mode, you’d need to input the command like this: game_mode 2; game_type 1. Upon inputting it like this in the console, the game will become Deathmatch instantly.

As we mentioned previously, it’s essential to use both commands together, otherwise game_mode alone won’t work. For example, if you wanted to set the game mode to Casual, and you input the command “game_mode 0”, it would not work. You’d need to input it like this: game_mode 0; game_type 0.

This is why we have created a table with all the available game modes for CS:GO and CS2, along with the combinations you need to use to launch each one via the console. Therefore, refer to it anytime you want to switch from a game mode to another.

Furthermore, we have also created a complete section full of examples, so you can learn how to select any of the 15 game modes by using the game_mode command. Check it out below to get started.
