CS2 & CS:GO Skin Float And Wear Rating Guide

In-game cosmetics, also known as skins, have become an integral part of how Counter-Strike has been shaped. Almost all CS2 players enjoy having customized weapon skins that make the game more enjoyable to play. However, unlike most other titles, skins in Counter-Strike come in different wear levels and float values, which influence how clean or scratched the skin looks. By the time you finish reading this article, you will be an expert on CS:GO wear rating and CS:GO float values.

What Is Float In CS:GO?

When you receive a skin in Counter-Strike, whether you obtained it from an in-game drop or unboxed it from a weapon case, that skin will come under a specific float value, which is a numerical value between 0.00 to 1.00.

Having a lower float value, meaning it is closer to 0.00, is preferable since the condition of the skin gets better as float values go down. A lower float value implies that the skin will have less scratches and tears, making the condition favorable.

This means having a skin’s float value closer to 1.00 is less favorable. Skins with high float values will have tons of scratches, making them less sought after due to poor conditions.

How Does Wear Rating CS:GO Relate To Float?

If you’ve read the section above, you will now understand that float values play an important role in skins, as they can directly affect the value of them depending on how high or low the float is.

The idea of float values directly relates to wear ratings and conditions for skins, which most of you may know as Factory New, Minimal Wear, Field-Tested, and so on. There are five wear conditions, with each condition corresponding to a range of float values. Let’s go over each of them.

Factory New (FN)

Factory New skins fall under the float range of: 0.00 – 0.07.

Skins in Factory New condition are the cream of the crop. The float value range suggests that all Factory New skins are extremely close to the 0.00 mark, making skins in this category look near-flawless with almost no visible scratches.

Since Factory New skins look spotless and clean, skins in this category are extremely sought after, which is why they are the most expensive wear category.

Minimal Wear (MW)

Minimal Wear skins fall under the float range of: 0.07 – 0.15.

Skins in Minimal Wear generally look like they are almost new, but you will tend to see a few visible scratches here and there. However, these tears are not too easily visible, and are only noticeable if you begin closely paying attention to the skin.

Minimal Wear is arguably the perfect condition for players with a limited budget, who are looking for a nice balance between good prices and a clean play skin.

Field-Tested (FT)

Field-Tested skins fall under the float range of: 0.15 – 0.37.

Now, we’re going down the float value chart with Field-Tested. Skins in the Field-Tested category begin wearing out, with very noticeable scratches and fades. It is very easy to tell the difference between Field-Tested skins and Minimal Wear, as the float range becomes very large.

Generally, Field-Tested skins do not look the best, but they are still usable for players who want a semi-decent play skin.

Well-Worn (WW)

Well-Worn skins fall under the float range of: 0.37 – 0.44.

Well-Worn skins have significantly more visible wear, as the scratches on the skin become very obvious. The float value is nearing the 0.5 mark, meaning skins in this category look very worn out already.

Skins in the Well-Worn category are generally very affordable since not many people want to keep them as play skins.

Battle-Scarred (BS)

Battle-Scarred skins fall under the float range of: 0.44 – 1.00.

The worst condition in the game by far is Battle-Scarred. The wear and tear on Battle-Scarred skins are extremely apparent, as there are major scratches and the colors of the skin will sometimes look different than intended.

Almost nobody wants their play skins to be in Battle-Scarred condition, and prices for such are extremely cheap.

How To Check CS:GO Float Value

Though float values are extremely important information in skins, Valve hasn’t made it too easy for players to figure out what the float values for their skins are. Here are two primary ways to check the float value of your skins.

Checking Float Value In-Game

The first and easiest way to check the float value of your items is through the in-game client.

Normally, you can hover over your skin to see the wear rating level, which will give you a good idea of which float value range the skin falls under. However, it never hurts to know the exact value of the skin.

Follow these steps to check the exact float values:

  1. Launch Counter-Strike and go to your Inventory.
  2. Left-click on the desired skin and click Inspect.
  3. At the bottom of the inspect menu, hover your mouse over the “i” button.
  4. Additional information will be displayed, and the exact float value of the skin will be visible.

Checking Float Value On Websites

If you are outside and do not have access to your computer, you can always check the float value of your skins using third-party websites.

Some of the best websites for checking float values is FloatDB, but there are tons of marketplace websites that offer the same service for free.

In most third-party websites, the procedure to checking your float is very similar and simple:

  1. Log in to your Steam account on the third-party website. Ensure the website is legit before you log in!
  2. Next, head over to your Inventory section on the website, where a list of all your skins will be displayed.
  3. Each website should explicitly state the exact float values of your skins.

However, keep in mind that your Steam Inventory visibility status must be set to public for these websites to access information about your skins.

Do CS:GO Skins Wear Out?

Counter-Strike is a very realistic game, so it wouldn’t be too mindblowing if your skins wear out as you use them more. Fortunately, GabeN isn’t that cruel, as your CS2 skins will NOT wear out after usage.

The float value you receive on your skin initially is permanent, meaning it will never change. It doesn’t matter if you’ve used the skins for tens of thousands of hours – the float value for the skin will never change.

Do CS:GO Knives Wear Out?

Similar to regular weapon skins, knives and gloves also do not wear out. You don’t have to worry about your Factory New skin downgrading to Minimal Wear.

Rare Float Values

Before we end off the article, we would also like to talk about rare float values. As we’ve discussed earlier, all players ideally want their skins to be as close as 0.00 as possible.

Sometimes, players can get extremely lucky and get float values between 0.00 and 0.01, meaning the skin is near-flawless. For high-tier skins, rare float values that are super close to 0.00 are ranked, meaning there is a “number 1” float for every skin.

Wealthy collectors will be willing to drop thousands of additional dollars to secure a skin with the number 1 float value in the world, or even ones among the top 10 best float values. Conversely, some collectors try purchasing the highest float value skins as well, just to flex.
