If you want to enable friendly fire in CS:GO and CS2 matches, you need to use the command mp_friendlyfire. When enabled, you’ll be able to hurt your own teammates. If you want to use it to customize your gameplay experience, here you’ll learn all about it.

We will introduce you to the mp_friendlyfire command, bring you instructions on how to input it via the console and share examples on how it’s used.

The mp_friendlyfire command, commonly referred to as the CSGO friendly fire command, allows you to turn the damage caused by friendly fire on or off. By default, it’s disabled, but if you wish to turn it on, you just need to enter the command in the console.

However, it’s worth noting that it’s activated by default in competitive matches, while it’s disabled in casual matches. Therefore, the argument of this command will depend on the gamemode you’re playing.

This command affects both Counter-Terrorist and Terrorist players in the same way. For example, if you’re on the Counter-Terrorist team and turn on this command, you’ll end up hurting your teammates if you shoot them, attack them with a knife, or throw a grenade nearby.

This command proves useful as it enables you to activate friendly fire if it’s turned off, preparing you for competitive modes where it’s always on. This provides additional training options for both CS:GO and CS2.

Arguments for the CSGO Friendly Fire Command

Because this command can only be turned on and off, it only accepts two values: 0 and 1. If you wish to turn it on, you need to use “1” as the argument, and if you want to turn it off, you need to use “0” as the argument for the command.

Therefore, this command is only used as a “switch” for activating and deactivating friendly fire at will in your CS:GO (CS2) server. Hence, it doesn’t change values such as the mirror damage, bullets damage, grenade damage, amongst other variables.

If you’re interested in further customizing the aspects of friendly fire, you’ll have to resort to other commands, but this one, mp_friendlyfire, is a solid start. Hence, it’s a useful tool when setting up and configuring your own server.

This command is compatible with CS:GO and CS2 without restrictions, and you can enter it directly in the console and it will take effect immediately. Therefore, if you activate it and you shoot a teammate, they will get damaged.

Precautions When Using the CSGO Friendly Fire Command

Activating this command will result in new conditions for the game. For instance, if you kill a teammate 3 times, the server will instantly ban you. Even if you’re the admin, doing this will get you kicked and banned from your very own server.

This feature acts as a safeguard against players who intentionally harm their own teammates. It’s a serious issue, especially in competitive matches, so CS:GO/CS2 have implemented this measure to combat such behavior.

Therefore, on top of using the mp_friendlyfire, you might want to use additional commands to adjust the number of teammate kills it will take to get a player kicked and banned from the server.

mp_friendlyfire Command for Competitive and Casual Matches in CS:GO (CS2)

As mentioned before, in casual games, this command is turned off by default, while in competitive matches, it’s always on. You can’t flip it on during casual play or off during competitive matches due to Valve’s restrictions.

To control this feature, you’ll need to create and manage your own server. Otherwise, you’re stuck with the defaults set by Valve for casual and competitive matches, without any way to change them.

This is a common query because many players attempt to use this command when setting up casual matches against bots, only to find that it won’t work. Unfortunately, this is just how CS:GO and CS2 are, and there’s no workaround aside from running your own server.

By hosting your server, you gain the freedom to play various game modes without constraints, as you can toggle friendly fire as needed. However, remember that even on your private server, you can’t adjust the mp_friendlyfire command for casual or competitive game modes.

How to Use the mp_friendlyfire Command

Now that you’re aware of the definition, purpose and functions of the command, here’s how you can use it via the console:

  1. Press the key “~” to launch the console
  2. Decide if you will turn friendly fire on or off
  3. Type in the command mp_friendlyfire “#”
  4. Press enter
  5. The command will execute immediately

You need to replace “#” for your selected argument for the command. Keep in mind that this command will only accept two values: 1 and 0. Using any other value won’t work and the command won’t be able to execute its function. Therefore, “1” is for activating it and “0” for deactivating it.

Furthermore, this command must be used by the server host or admin, as it’s going to alter the mechanics of the game.

This command doesn’t require you to activate sv_cheats 1 beforehand, as it’s 100% legal on private servers. Just make sure to respect the syntax and accepted arguments and it will execute without problems.

Examples on How to Use the mp_friendlyfire Command

Let’s explore the examples on how you can use this command to activate or deactivate friendly fire in CS:GO and CS2. Remember that this won’t work for casual and competitive game modes, and that it requires you to be a server host or admin.

Activate Friendly Fire for CTs

All you need to do to activate friendly fire for CTs is to enter the command like this: mp_friendlyfire 1. After entering this command, you’ll be able to damage your CT teammates. Take into account that team killing will get you kicked and banned, even if it’s your own server.

Activate Friendly Fire for Ts

If you want to activate friendly fire for Terrorists, you need to enter the command like this: mp_friendlyfire 1. After enabling it, your T teammates will receive damage from attacks. However, keep in mind that killing teammates 3 times will get you kicked and banned.

Deactivate Friendly Fire for CTs

If you want to deactivate friendly fire for Counter-Terrorist players, you only need to input the command like this: mp_friendlyfire 0. It will take effect immediately, and you can test it by shooting your teammates because they will receive zero damage.

Deactivate Friendly Fire for Ts

In order to deactivate friendly fire for Terrorist players, just input the command like this: mp_friendlyfire 0. Upon entering it via the console, you’ll be able to shoot and attack your teammates without damage.

Using Another Argument for the Command

If you use another argument for the command, such as “5”, resulting in the following command – mp_friendlyfire 5 – it will not work because it doesn’t have a function for this or another value other than “0” or “1”, which correspond to false and true respectively.
